  2. Gruen 1886-1973. Israeli statesman and
  3. socialist politician, one of the founders of
  4. the state of Israel, the country's first
  5. prime minister 1948-53, and again 1955-63. He
  6. was born in Poland, and went to Palestine in
  7. 1906 to farm. He was a leader of the Zionist
  8. movement, and as defense minister he presided
  9. over the development of Israel's armed forces
  10. into one of the strongest armies in the
  11. Middle East.
